Tfou aalik, le château de mon père
Tfou aalik, le château de mon père
About the work:
The castle is my father's. He built it with the sweat of his brow. "There'll be plenty of space for everyone. You'll have your own bedroom, just like your brother and your sister!". Well yeah, the castle is big. Maybe a little too big. It's empty and silent. I got lost inside it. Like my father. I've never seen my father, but his absence makes a lot of noise. It echoes. A sound that scrapes the throat and bursts out all at once: "tfou aalik, tfou, TFOU!". I like playing with that sound. It's something I carry through my whole body, on my back, in my belly. It needs to come out, so I spit it out. It's not mean, you know? I can draw it for you if you want. I lost my pencil case and my crayons, so I'll make it for you with my hands and my legs. Anyway, I don't know how to do it any other way. The drawing isn't just pretty. It's not neat, it spills over a bit, but it's everything I didn't know how to say. Sometimes I look at it and I'm not really sure what story it's telling, but I like it. It looks like urges, quick movements, like tap dance and dabke mixed with hip-hop, stomping the ground and then floating in an ocean of olive oil, a huge wave. Jeddo told me they call that a tsunami in a country a little further east from us. Jeddo is my grandfather. I haven't seen him much either, but we talk from time to time. He's the one who told me to look inside. Inside, everything is immersion, and there are many of us. There are other sounds that carry my "tfou." Jeddo told me they're the sounds of Patrick De Oliveira. I call him Pratique, because he helps me make the turmoil dance. I wonder if Jeddo dances sometimes. And if he also talks to his son, my father. Did he have a castle to build too? There isn't necessarily an answer, just like there might be lots of stories inside the one I'm telling you right now. I'm not asking you to understand, just to come and look. You'll see a castle that moves. And maybe you'll recognize a room from your own castle.
